Casual Disability Education Learning Support School Assistants – Primary and Secondary

ACT public schools educate more than 50,000 students across 93 schools including early childhood schools, preschools, primary schools, high schools, colleges and specialist school settings.

Our 4 specialist schools provide education settings for students who have been diagnosed with moderate, severe or profound intellectual disability:  Cranleigh (kindergarten to year 6) and Black Mountain School (years 7-12) on Canberra’s northside and Malkara (preschool to year 6) and The Woden School (years 7-12) on the southside.

About the role:

As a Casual Disability Education Learning Support School Assistant, you will:

  • Support individual students and small groups with classroom learning and activities, guided by the classroom teacher.
  • Work collaboratively within a school team to support student engagement and participation.
  • Provide personal care and health-related support for students where required, including assistance with toileting and menstrual care.
  • Support students with high physical needs, by following individual physical management plans, including routine manual handling tasks.
  • Assist with mealtimes in line with student eating and drinking plans.
  • Help maintain positive, safe and inclusive learning spaces.
  • Support student wellbeing throughout the school day.

What we’re looking for:

  • Relevant qualifications such as Certificate IV in Education Support (desirable or willingness to work towards one).
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • A caring, student‑centred approach, with a genuine interest in supporting children and young people in their learning.
  • An understanding of diverse learning needs, including how to assist students who require additional support or extension.
  • Effective teamwork and reliability, with good organisational and time‑management skills.
  • An approachable personality and a professional attitude in a school environment.

Eligibility requirements:

To be employed in an ACT public school, you must have:

  • A valid ACT Working with Vulnerable People (WwVP) registration(or eligibility to apply)
  • Australian citizenship, permanent residency or a valid working visa.
