Details: The ACT Education Directorate is seeking reliable and enthusiastic casual Building Service Officers (BSO) to join us in‑built casual team. We are looking for individuals with a strong interest in facilities and grounds maintenance, who enjoy hands‑on work and supporting school communities.

As a casual BSO, your primary role is to provide relief and support to school‑based Building Service Officers. You will assist with general cleaning and maintenance tasks during school hours, help address safety and security issues as they arise, and contribute to maintaining a safe, tidy, and welcoming school environment. You may also be required to complete basic repairs and respond to urgent maintenance needs in line with Work Health and Safety standards.

These positions are part of the Building Services Taskforce and are not assigned to one specific school. You may be placed at any ACT public school on a short‑ or long‑term basis depending on operational needs. Flexibility is essential, as you may be required to work at different locations across the ACT, sometimes at short notice.

Eligibility/ Other Requirements:

  • Prior to commencing this role, a current registration issued under the Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act 2011 is required. For further information on Working with Vulnerable People registration refer to - Apply for or renew a WWVP registration - Access Canberra
  • Asbestos awareness card or a willingness to obtain - Asbestos Awareness Training and evidence of completion delivered by a Registered Training Organisation is required before commencement, for further information refer to: Asbestos Awareness Training - WorkSafe ACT
  • Crystalline Silica Exposure Prevention: Evidence of completion of training delivered by a Registered Training Organisation for Crystalline Silica Exposure Prevention is required prior to commencement. For further information refer to: WorkSafe website
  • White Card: Workplace Health and Safety Induction (White Card) or willingness to obtain; General Construction Induction Card (White Card)
  • A pre-employment medical clearance is required prior to commencement. This assessment is at the cost of the Directorate and not the applicant. If/when a request for registration is in the final stages of completion, contact will be made with the applicant to organise the medical assessment.
  • Mandatory training in other WHS requirements may be provided during your employment.
  • A current drivers’ licence is essential.

Note: These positions will be offered on a casual basis, with opportunities for short‑term and long‑term placements, including part‑time and full‑time contracts across schools. Casual hourly rate: $33.26433 excluding casual loading + $8.31608 25% loading.
A merit pool will be created from this recruitment process and may be used to fill future casual or contract vacancies over the next 12 months.

Note
